Two Top Community Groups Back Charter Reform

SACRAMENTO – Two of the most powerful community organizations in the city -- the Sacramento Association of Realtors and the Sacramento Builders Exchange – today announced their endorsement of the charter reform initiatives proposed by Sacramentans for Accountable Government.

“You would never enter a building built by a committee that lacked the direction of an accountable leader who could ensure its structural soundness, so why then should Sacramento residents, businesses and taxpayers continue to lean on a City Hall that lacks the organizational structure to ensure its own fiscal stability?” said

Jim Lambert, CEO, Sacramento Builders Exchange. “Sacramentans voted in the last election for the promise of change, and our Mayor and City Council must be given the tools necessary to enact that change while being held accountable for the results.  Representing 2,900 commercial builders, the Sacramento Builders’ Exchange is proud to support the Sacramentans for Accountable Government reform initiatives.”

The reform initiatives will hold elected officials responsible and create more accountability to voters. It will change the city’s outdated structure of governing by committee with an unelected city manager as its ceo and instead provide needed checks and balances with the City Council as the legislative branch and the Mayor as the executive branch.

The initiatives will modernize the city’s form of government to give the Mayor and City Council the ability to better reflect residents’ priorities in the budget. In addition, the reforms will also create an independent budget analyst. The analyst will have the ability to scrutinize the budget and provide recommendations on spending tax dollars efficiently and effectively.
